Why the Canyon Lightning™ tail is a game-changer.


I've been in the shop since sunrise, and the progress is real: The fuselage is officially one piece, the fin and rudder are gusseted, and two more wing ribs are off the jig. 🛠⚡



Take a look at the taper on this rudder. Most ultralights use a flat plate tail made of round aluminum tubes. It's easy to build, but it's an aerodynamic drag trap.


The Canyon Lightning™ difference:


Instead of a flat pipe, I'm building a true tapered airfoil.

📏The Specs: 1.5" at the spar, tapering down to a razor-thin 0.25" at the trailing edge.

🌲The Build: Douglas Fir truss core, custom-fitted foam inserts, and a final structural carbon fiber wrap.

Why go through the trouble?

1️⃣Control authority: At slow STOL speeds, this airfoil grips the air better than a flat plate, giving you massive rudder authority when you need it most.

2️⃣Efficiency: Less drag means more of that 38HP goes into climb and cruise, not just fighting the wind.

3️⃣Weight: Even with the foam and carbon, this unitized tail is nearly 50% lighter than the old-school aluminum-and-bolt versions.


We aren't just building an airplane for under $2,000; we're out-engineering the status quo.
